The term contract research refers to scientific research for a private or public-sector client. The key characteristic is dependency. The research objectives and methods as well as the further use of the results are not determined by the research institution, but by the client.
Details of the research content, remuneration and handling of the rights to the research results are defined in a research and development contract concluded between the contract research institute or contract research company and the client. Depending on whether it is a publicly funded collaborative project or another type of cooperative research, different legal framework conditions must be taken into account when drafting the contract.
In terms of tax law, the client must both calculate with full cost accounting and pay VAT for the contract research.
